33: Inner Workings

Blume was exhausted by the time they reached the airship. The only thing that kept them running was the knowledge that if they could just get to the Sky Dart, their chances of escape were greatly improved.

They were climbing the last dune now. Ealrin was over the crest first, followed by Amrolan, Dangler, and Jeremy. Teresa and Blume came last.

Blume looked up to see Urt standing on the rigging. He was waving them forward and shouting at them. Blume was breathing too heavy at the moment to hear what she was saying.

Ealrin yelled back.

“Make sure we’re ready to fly!” he said as they rushed down the hill. Blume began to slide forward on the sand, her momentum carrying her. She did her best to use her hands to keep herself from tumbling, or at least to stop her from rolling over and over again.

The group of them landed at the bottom of the dune in a pile of sand just as they heard the shouts of the guards.

They weren’t very far behind.

“Everyone on the ship!” Ealrin shouted.

He helped Blume up and looked her in the eye.

“You have to try to help me get these pieces in the right place,” he said. “I would ask Gorplin, but...”

Blume understood. With her magic, she could shape the precious Rimstones they had acquired from Madame Malaise and place the parts where they needed to go. Since the dwarf was somewhere else, she was the best hope they had.

All she needed was a little direction from Ealrin. Unfortunately, she knew quite well he didn’t know where everything went exactly.

They scrambled up the side of the airship hoping that they could get there before the guards managed to get to the bottom of the dunes. Just as Blume scrambled over the top of the railing, she heard a guard shouting from behind her.

“It is an airship! The blasted Rerial scum are here!” one of them said. “Rerial is attacking! Return quickly and inform the city!”

Blume didn’t have time to consider the consequences of all of what was going on. She just ran with the crew to the deck hole that lead down to the inner workings of the airship.

They climbed past the first level which had all of their bunks and some storage, down onto the second, which housed all of the magical pieces and gears that powered the ship.

Blume still didn’t know exactly how it all worked, but she was willing to try. Ealrin opened up his bag and laid out the few pieces of Rimstone as well as the gloves they had acquired for the belt that was broken. That part was easy. Blume magicked the glove into a strip the same length as the broken belt and then stretched it into place. It gave a satisfied glow as it snapped where it was supposed to go. The next part was a gear.

“That’s the old one!” Ealrin said, pointing at a place where there were several gears while he began to fiddle with the final piece, a box.
